Smithsonian

Jonathan got this really cool Smithsonian set for Christmas. It deals with all things pre-historic.  There's a kit for building a volcano, for digging out dinosaur bones, and for hatching live Triop fish. This is exactly the kind of stuff he likes to do. Everything should be hands-on in his world. Jonathan insisted that he didn't need any help following the instructions so we all just sat back and enjoyed watching.  I took pictures of one of the activities:

Jonathan was pretty excited to pull out the goggles and get to work with his hammer and chisel. The brick was pretty strong so he had to chip away a little at a time, looking for the promised dinosaur bones.

Finally he struck plastic and we were thrilled to discover that there really was something in there. (We were starting to wonder.)

A leg bone! A rib cage! He kept hammering and dusting and hammering some more. Halfway through the brick we had to call a time-out and go to bed.

Early the next morning Jonathan was up chiseling away again. When the brick was sufficiently pounded to pieces and all the bones were found, he washed the remaining sediment out from all the little crevices. He analyzed the different shapes and snapped the bones into place.

Ta-da!  Here's a cute little dinosaur replica and a very happy 9-year-old.

Heather, he got it from Santa. I'm pretty sure I've seen them at Costco before though.
