Finally Tried It

Have I mentioned that I love using my Cricut? It's fun for all kind of projects. I've had an idea churning in my head for awhile -- to make a fondant cake using my Cricut. But I never got around to it.

Last week I heard about a Cricut contest. The challenge is to make any kind of project using a cartridge released in 2009. There will be thousands of entries so of course I would need to make something that would stand out. A cake maybe? It HAS been done before, but the company warns not to put the goo in your machine or it will void the warranty. So I came up with my own method. I decided to try it out.

After sending Ben to the store for supplies (thank you!), I cut the shapes out of cardstock using my Cricut. I used those as stencils to cut around the colored and rolled fondant using an X-acto knife. (As if it was that simple.) Here are my first creations. I was happy with them. So I put a day into it and here's what I came up with:

Not bad for my first fondant cake! I wish the picture was a little nicer since it was my official entry, but luckily this wasn't a photo contest. There are details that don't show up in it, like the little creases on the pineapple drink. The entry also included step-by-step instructions.

Here's the border up close. There were sea creatures swimming around the bottom edge under the waves, all the way around. I really wish I could display this in person, to give the overall effect. Hopefully my three photos show it well enough.

Here's the "back" of the cake. I love the little seahorse.
We used the cake for my brother's birthday and the kids gobbled it up. I hope the judges are just as enthusiastic. Even if they aren't, I am truly happy that I did this. It was the perfect combination of something I love to do and something I've been wanting to learn.
Even if I didn't win their contest, I did earn myself a big slice of satisfaction.
