Little Women

Last week I went to our Girl's Camp for three days. It was pretty wet but we were prepared!  I had an absolutely wonderful time.  I loved girl's camp when I was a young woman (ages 12-17) but I had no idea it would be ten times more fun as a leader! I made two rules for myself before I went:

Rule #1 - No camera     (It was torture.)

Rule #2 - Eat Whatever I Want      (It was bliss.)

They had really big marshmallows.  REALLY big.  I'd roast it and peel off the outside and then re-roast it, and repeat. After 5 times it would be small enough to put on a s'more.  Yes, it was that good.

As a leader, I was a shining example. This is the right way to get even with pranksters. (They deserved it.) While the girls were on their mandatory hike, a few of us leaders stayed behind to "clean up."  When they returned, the cabin was sparkling clean and their five sleeping bags were tied way up in the trees.

Those are my two pictures from girls camp, donated by my friend who knew I would die without a couple pictures to blog with.  It was an amazing three days. The girls learned their camping skills, we had some neat spiritual meetings, and of course we laughed hard and had a lot of silly fun. I loved it.

One week later:

I DID manage to take pictures of our young women's activity last night. We're teaching the girls to make their own pajamas.  They cut them out and pinned them.

The girls learned the basic skills of using a sewing machine. This is how you thread it. (A moment later we had a little drama as she drew blood. I don't know how.)

Even the most terrified young woman was able to sew her own.  She did great!

(That piece of paper on the table told her each step. The girl in green was writing it on the board. 1)Put fabric in place 2) Clamp down 3) Needle down 4) Hold strings 5) Sew!  You can't be too specific when you're teaching a skill, right?)

I was really impressed with how well they did.  All six of the girls got halfway done with their pajamas and they are SO excited. We'll finish up next time. (Or the next.) I love working with the young women. I teach the 12- and 13-year-olds and they are so sweet and beautiful and energetic.

I definitely enjoy our weekly Girl's Night Out.

You are I'm sure the best leader ever! I may sneak in and learn some skills on sewing myself. I am the worst sewer on the planet! Wait, sewer (to sew) and sewer (as in hole with water and rats) are spelled the same. Interesting.

What a fun calling for you. Those young women could not ask for a better leader.

We did that too with our YW when I was in it. It took us two times, and then I had them finish up at my house when some still weren't done. :) But, they all LOVED them and still wear them. Good times! You would be an awesome YW leader.

I LOVED Young Women's Camp when I was a teenager! Good thing because later on I was called to be the ward camp leader and then much later, in another state, as a stake camp leader. You are so lucky to have that calling!
