My Alter Egos

Lately my brain has been going in three different directions - and only one is referring to my family! So here is a little about my other two selves:

A Bear Scout Leader! I've been serving with the 9-year-olds since last summer and I'm finally feeling like I can handle it. I think. We went to Day Camp last week. I spent most of my time counting to make sure all thirteen green hats were still with me. Any other day you would have seen me in my super-cute official scout uniform.

Despite the warnings from past leaders, I actually had a lot of fun at Day Camp. The boys have grown on me and they were really excited to be there. So how could I not be?
I have learned a lot of different things in this role, mostly about the power of attitudes (my own especially) and how to understand and respect boys. They really are quite amazing creatures. It will help me a lot as our boys get older. There are some things I'm still trying to figure out, like:

Why is this easier than filling up your water bottle? I'm not sure who was laughing harder - me, as I was taking this picture, or the head scoutmaster who was laughing at me laughing at them. Apparently I was the odd one out. No water for me, thanks.
---------------

My other time-consumer is helping with the library. I'm over the Summer Reading Program at the city library. I was talked into it and I don't regret it yet but I'm surprised how involved it is. We just had our kick-off party - with games, crafts, face painting, story time, and treats (thanks Heidi, for the spider lollipop idea).
The kids had a lot of fun and we met our attendance goal - not bad for being rained out. We had to have it in the fire station! There are about 70 kids involved so far (small town) and I get to provide story hours, activities, and 70+ prizes each week.
The main reason I'm doing it is because of our boys. I was told that if nobody would volunteer, the library would have to shut down the program. Jonathan and Zachary loved the activities last year so I didn't want that to happen. So here I am. I'm keeping my eye out for a new leader next year!
---------------
I hope that neither of my descriptions sounded like complaints. I believe strongly in the importance of both roles. It's a bit hard to juggle with our three young kids, but we're making it work and enjoying life. Thank heavens for amazing babysitters!

Kristen I am so impressed! I really need to go to the library more often. More often would mean going PERIOD. haha I also just have to comment on the first picture...I was wondering what was hanging between your legs and then realized it was the white pole behind you! Ok, that sounds weird and perverted but really just an innocent observation. I almost didn't mention it but then thought it was too funny to resist. As for google reader, yes, I do have it and it have saved me from many hours of checking back to see if people have updated their blogs. Although it does make me a little lazier in commenting-sorry! Who is Rush? I am confused.

WOW 13 BOYS? I'm impressed. That we scary me. Love the water cooler picture. Alita has found out if she stands on the toliet she can get a drink out of the sink. She does it at least 3 times a day. Why, I have no idea? As for the Library thing, I love how you say it is only 70 kids. That is a lot. Way to keep yourself busy. As for google reader, I do use it but I also check you blog daily.

I want your job. If you ever need ideas for cute little projects/books and what not, you know where to call. (The library, not scouts). We go to story time every week. This last week they had cooked worms and Maddie ATE one! I was so shocked. She said, "Mom, it wasn't real." Um, yes it was! They are learning about bugs this month.

OK- just had to chuckle at Heather's pole observation. ::chuckle chuckle::

I, too, have been relying heavily on Google reader, but every so often the thought "hey, why hasn't Kristen updated her blog?" enters my mind and is quickly followed with "oops! oh yeah! Gotta go check it."

It may be mostly because I have limited thinking abilities these days. Check back with me in a year.

What great things to be devoting your time to!! I just got put into Cub Scouts, it's really been a great eye opening experience - I always used to think Scouts was "dorky" but I realize now it can really be SO fun for the boys and a great character building opportunity. I also realize the leader can make or break the program, so these boys are so lucky to have someone like you in charge! I'm just sorry we missed out on seeing you in your very stylish uniform.

As far as the reading program, I think that's AWESOME! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the library, story time, and especially the summer reading programs. Seriously, I have the BEST memories of summer reading as a kid and I think it's so great that you're making it happen for the kids in your community. And it looks like SO MUCH FUN!

That is great about all the things you are involved in. I signed Caden up for a free reading program over the summer for 4-5 year olds. He starts it this week. I hope it is as fun as the one you are doing. It looks like a blast! You are awesome!

Dude, good job juggling all that stuff. Makes me tired just to think about dealing with that many scouts.
