I was in the middle of mopping the floor today, when Jonathan came up and asked me if we're carving pumpkins tonight. Oh, right. Maybe I should have planned that a little better. But aside from the new splatters on the floor, we had a GREAT family activity.
Jonathan picked out his own pumpkin at his Kindergarten field trip. He drew the face, Ben scooped out the guts, and I did the cutting. The Frankenstein was my creation - from seed to pumpkin to monster.
Here's Ben working studiously, and Zachary helping of course.
The finished product is Mario. Our boys love Mario. Nicole approves too. For patterns, I googled "free pumpkin carving templates." Our printer wasn't working, but that didn't stop me. I traced the patterns from the computer screen onto plastic wrap with a sharpie. Now we're all set for Halloween! Here's a tasty family tradition: (EASY)
Baked Pumpkin Seeds
1-1/2 cups raw pumpkin seeds
1/2 tsp salt (plain, kosher, garlic, or seasoned)
1 TBS melted butter or olive oil
1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
2. Wash seeds and pat dry. (You can leave some of the gooey stuff on. I like the flavor.)
3. Mix well with seasoning and butter. Spread onto a greased baking sheet and arrange in a single layer.
4. Bake for up to 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown. I usually add more salt as they're cooling.

I'll be baking ours in the morning. I was going to skip it this year (long story), but Jonathan insisted. I guess that's how family traditions keep going. If you haven't already thrown out your pumpkin guts, you can try something new!

So cute! And what a way to get a pattern!!! I absolutely love those glasses! They're so nice on him. Looks like you guys had lots of fun! I got Ashley to get a little of the guts out. Then she said "Oops! I gotta wash my hands!"
I love the frankenstein pumpkin. I am so impressed! Hope you all had a fun Halloween. I also think Jonathan looks so cute in his glasses. I LOVE little kids in glasses. I know, it's weird.
I keep turning my head sideways and back. I don't see Mario. Maybe I need glasses.
I had forgotten that Ben sticks his tongue out when he's concentrating. That would so give him away if he was a Jedi master.
You have such a cute family! How are you guys doing? We are well. My blog is michelereeves.blogspot.com
CONGRATULATIONS!!!! on the baby.
You guys are way more creative with your pumpkin carving! They look great!
i am such a loser keeping up with your blog because it doesn't come up on my reader and i actually *have* to click on a link! Congrats on the BOY, i am glad everything is well!
Thanks for the recipe. We painted pumpkins instead of carving. I'll have to try those pumpkin seeds. My favorite has to be the Frankenstein. Although my eyes are not working to well and I can't see the Mario. It's like those 3-D pictures. One I see it I will not be able to stop seeing it. Well I better head off so I can stare at that picture longer.
