Help me out here, please! (This may even be entertaining.)
Jonathan's kindergarten homework has me perplexed. He knew exactly how to do it and there's no doubt that he got it right. But... why? What is this method of teaching? Maybe it will look familiar to some of you experienced parents. Look below the th's and r's, to the boxes with letters and pictures:
What is this all about? On previous papers it would show an arrow to sound out the letters, like in m-e-t. Met. Great. But here we have an e and then the picture of a truck. E-truck? I asked him about it. He said, "Yeah it says e-truck." Great.
Look at the rest. Stree?
I laughed hard when I got to i-ball. Are we learning compound words? That looks a lot like eyeball to me! Until Jonathan informs me that its the soft sound, like in bit: Oh, okay. i-ball What?!?!?!
d-bird? Okay, seriously, help me out. I trust that these phonetics people know what they're talking about. But quite honestly I'm embarrassed to ask his teacher. (So instead I'd prefer to ask dozens of friends online?) I'd hate to have Jonathan's teacher forever judge him by his mother's ignorance.
I hope Jonathan will someday regain his faith in me. I was a high school aide. An after-school tutor. My minor at BYU was in English. I LOVE grammar and editing and reading. But these d-birds are new to me.
Help, anyone?

Very perplexing . . . I haven't got a clue!
Hahaha! Seriously, I'm embarrassed to call such an ignoramous my friend. Where have you been hiding? I thought everyone knew about i balls, strees, etrucks, and dbirds. Some people....
???? your the one that tutored Dakota!! LOL But I think I would've been the first one in the class the next day sayin' huhhh??
Uhhhhhhhhhh........
I can ask my friend to take a look on Friday. She was a grade school teacher a little over 2 years ago. I think 2nd or 3rd grade, but maybe she knows a fellow teacher for a younger grade. My brain is befuddled after studying it. And, what's up with the "long e" mark?
hmmm...i too am perplexed!! good luck :) i hate helping with kids homework. it makes me feel like an idiot!! i used to be smart! and then i had you....that is what i tell them :0)
What the... are you sure those are the letters that are suppost to go i those spots?
I hate to be the first to say it, "That's Idaho Schooling for ya!" (I can only say that because I married a spud). Good luck with that one!
So I taught Kindergarten for only 5year and I can't believe no one knows what is going on with this worksheet. Because I am totally lost. I think it was probably a printing error. You should show it to the teacher, she would probably get a good laught.
HERE'S THE ANSWER!!!
I knew I was in trouble when Marie and Jenn (teachers) didn't have a clue. With your reassurance, I gave in and asked his teacher. She laughed and told me it's the only thing she doesn't like about the new phonics system. It makes sense but it's not logically important. (And I think I got bonus points as a parent for noticing!) Here goes:
The goal is to teach kids to look at letters individually without skipping. (The example they used is that kids will try to spell "cat" with just "c-t" because they didn't learn to pay attention to the "a".) This exercise is supposed to help them catch EACH letter and not rely on surrounding letters.
On his paper, e obviously doesn't go with truck, so we know he didn't cheat to get "e" when he repeated the pattern.
So I guess the rest of us WERE cheating? =o) I have my opinions about this, but it's good to know that it wasn't a typo and I wasn't just crazy. The teacher assured me that this is the only time we'll ever see it - from now on we'll be reading real words. What a relief!
Thanks to everyone for your help! Except for Heidi. (Who seems to have forgotten that this is the school I went to, and later graduated from BYU in 3 years, magna cum laude. THBBBPPTTT!!! Sorry - you know you were just egging me on.) =o) Well I do speak like an Idahoan, even though I know better. Fine.
Uhh, that still doesn't make any sense to me. Why not just use the u for truck? And an a for ball? If you ask me, it is probably doing more damage than good to associate an e with pictures of a truck.
Maybe it's the Utah schooling in me, but I still don't get it.
And why did you assume I meant "Idaho Schooling" as a negative thing?? Mabye I meant that your kids are just WAY smarter than all of us!
Get your kids out of that state NOW. Leave behind toys and iballs. Load the family into your etruck, and don't look back! (You'll need to look forward so as not to drive into any strees on your way across the state line.)
oh boy... interesting phonics. I would be rather perplexed if my son came home with that homework too!!! I get what the teacher was trying to say but it makes no sense to teach it that way.... good thing its the only one you'll see like that!!
